Built for dogs, and the humans who love them
We built Hiking Dogs so every dog in Aotearoa gets more time on the trails. It maps the dog-friendly hikes, the lead rules, the swim stops and the climbs, all in one place.
Our mission
New Zealand's dog-access rules are strict, scattered and easy to get wrong, and that keeps a lot of dogs at home. We wanted to change that. Hiking Dogs pulls the hikes, the campsites, the permits and the real terrain together so you can plan a trip with your dog in minutes and head out knowing the rules before you go.
We are a small team, and everything on the site is checked against DOC and council sources. The map only ever lists tracks where dogs are welcome, and every page shows the dog verdict up front.

The dog behind it
Hiking Dogs began with one dog and a simple problem: working out where he was actually allowed to walk. That dog is Banks: half Border Collie, half Golden Retriever, born on a late-summer day in February 2026 and four months old as you read this. He got the collie's need to be moving and the golden's certainty that everyone he meets is a friend, and he has loved every corner of Aotearoa we've managed to show him so far.
Every track we add, we add with him in mind, is the lead rule clear, is there water to cool off in, is the climb honest? What started as a map for one dog has grown into a guide to dog-friendly Aotearoa for the whole pack.
