Off-leash

Off-leash dog areas in New Zealand, district by district

Off the lead is a council decision, written park by park, and there is no national map of it. We hold the published layers for 11 districts: 523 named places where the bylaw lets a dog run, plus every dog park we can actually show is fenced.

What this covers, and what it does not. These 523 places come out of 582 mapped council polygons across 11 district datasets. Most New Zealand councils do not publish an off-leash layer we can hold, so a district missing from this page is a gap in the open data, not a rule. Where we hold nothing, ring the council or read the bylaw before you unclip. Zone data is each council's own dog control data, licensed as the attribution on each district page states.
Off-leash and fenced are different questions. A council zone is a rule about the lead, and none of these datasets say anything about a fence around one. Of the 66 dog park records we hold nationally, 19 carry a published statement that they are fenced, 10 are part fenced or have a fence line merely drawn on a map, and 37 say nothing about fencing at all. That last group is the largest, and we list it as unconfirmed rather than dressing it up.
Fenced

The 19 dog parks with a published fencing statement

Nationwide, not only the districts above. Each row carries the source's own words and a link to the page they came from, because on this particular question a claim without a citation is worth very little. Gates, double gates and separate pens for small dogs all vary, so read the quote rather than the heading.

  • 1 of those rows sit on a council dog park page that classes the area as fenced while the line we can quote describes the park instead. The link is there so you can read the page in full.
  • 10 further dog parks are part fenced, or have a fence drawn in OpenStreetMap that nothing confirms encloses the dog area.
  • 37 carry no fencing statement at all. Treat those as open ground until you have seen it for yourself.
  • Fencing comes from each council's own dog park pages. Additional locations are from OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).
