Dogs are only allowed at Moawhitu Campsite with a Department of Conservation permit, sorted before you arrive. We have drafted the email for you: it reaches the Picton DOC office, which looks after the Marlborough Sounds. Add your details and send it.

- Apply before you travel. A permit can take up to five days, and it is not issued at the campsite.
- Add your dog's details. Include the microchip and council registration numbers and your trip dates. The draft has a line for each.
- Wait for DOC to confirm. They reply with the permit or tell you what else they need, such as proof of aversion training.

Barge your own vehicle or take a water taxi from Te Aumiti/French Pass to Kapowai, and then continue on foot, mountain bike, quad bike or vehicle along the 27 km road to Moawhitu in Greville Harbour/Wharariki. Or boat or fly by private aircraft to Moawhitu. If driving, it's essential you have a 4WD vehicle and experience – the last 2 km of the road is steep, narrow and winding.
