Dogs are only allowed at Sanctuary Campsite with a Department of Conservation permit, sorted before you arrive. We have drafted the email for you: it reaches the Whakatāne DOC office, which looks after Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park. Add your details and send it.

- Apply before you travel. A permit can take up to five days, and it is not issued at the campsite.
- Add your dog's details. Include the microchip and council registration numbers and your trip dates. The draft has a line for each.
- Wait for DOC to confirm. They reply with the permit or tell you what else they need, such as proof of aversion training.

A small campsite by the Minginui Stream, the Sanctuary Campsite protects a striking remnant of podocarp forest and a bird sanctuary. The Sanctuary Track is an easy loop track that leads through remnant podocarp forest.

Turn left off Minginui Road just before Minginui village. The campsite is 7.5 km down Sanctuary Road. There is direct vehicle access from Sanctuary Road.
