Dog parks in Kaiapoi

Two hectares in Gladstone Park, opened 2017, with separate large dog and small dog areas that the council describes as fenced. A walking circuit, information signs, seating, dog waste bags, bins and a water supply. The council calls it deliberately unmanicured, "a safe but more natural environment for dogs", so the planting is still growing into shade. Access from Gladstone Road, Woodend, or Hakatere Road, Pegasus.

Waimakariri District Council's dog parks page, verbatim: "A two hectare dog park was established in Gladstone Park in 2017 - access to this is from Gladstone Road, Woodend or Hakatere Road, Pegasus. The park features separate large and small dog park areas which are fenced so dogs can be let off leash to run and play. A pleasant walking circuit, information signs and seating are provided, along with dog waste bags, bins and a water supply. In time the new trees will grow to provide areas of shade and basic dog agility equipment added for dogs to play on." Waimakariri District Council's Dog Control Bylaw 2019 (2023 schedule amendment), under the heading DOG PARKS/ DOG EXERCISE AREAS, lists it among the areas the council has designated: "Council has designated the following areas as Dog Parks or Dog Exercise Areas: Gladstone dog park, Kaiapoi dog park, Millton Memorial Park dog park, Southbrook dog park". The same clause says "Dogs must be on a lead when entering and exiting the dog park". The council says the large and small areas are fenced but does not say the whole park is enclosed, so this stays at partial.

2.2 hectares in Norman Kirk Park on former red zone land: 1.6 ha for large dogs and a separate 0.6 ha small dog area. Dog waste bins and bag dispensers, drinking fountains with dog bowls, and park benches throughout, under mature trees kept from the gardens that stood here. Three entrances, off Charles Street, off Jollie Street, and one inside the Honda Forest area.

Reported by Inge and Pip (Aug 2026), who confirmed the small dog area, the bins, the water and the bag dispensers on the ground. Note on the fence: Waimakariri names Gladstone, Oaks Reserve and Southbrook as fenced on this same page and says nothing about a fence at Kaiapoi, so we do not record this one as fenced in the council's words. Two other things do say so. OpenStreetMap way 898311927 is the dog park boundary itself, tagged barrier=fence and leisure=dog_park, and it is a closed ring around the whole park. And Inge and Pip, who walk here, told us twice that it is fenced (Aug 2026). Treat it as enclosed on the ground and keep an eye on the gates, but the council has not put it in writing.
