ROUTELoop

This walk was suggested by the community and checked against the authority quoted above before it was published. The route line comes from official track data. The rule-setter’s own wording: “On lead, start to finish. Balclutha township sits inside a Leash Control Area under the Clutha Regulatory Bylaw 2022, which requires a dog in any public place in the township to be kept on a leash, chain or lead that cannot break loose. The one spot in Balclutha where a dog can legally be off lead is the fenced Clutha Vets Dog Park at Centennial Park, and that is not on this loop. Add a live airfield, grazed pasture and winter rabbit bait, and the lead earns its keep here”. Evidence: the rule-setter’s own published wording. How we check dog rules.

About Balclutha Aerodrome River Loop

Near Balclutha in Otago, Balclutha Aerodrome River Loop runs 3.8 km as a loop.

Flat, wide and about 3.8 km round, this is the circuit local riders and walkers use to loop the Balclutha Aerodrome. The whole thing sits inside Riverside Reserve, the council flats out where the Matau and Koau branches of the Clutha split, and the going is mown grass and stopbank the entire way. Park by the river at the town end of the Balclutha Bridge, next to the i-SITE and the public toilets, drop down the ramp and under the bridge arch, then follow the track along the water to the south east, right around the outside of the airfield, and back up Glasgow Street into town. Members also park by the river behind the recreation centre and cut past the playing fields to join the loop, which works just as well. The under-bridge section is the catch. That short stretch beneath the Balclutha Bridge sits low on the bank, and when the Clutha runs high it goes under and there is no way through. Council knows about it: the Balclutha Reserves Management Plan lists the fix as an opportunity for the reserve, wording it as a plan to "Establish safe pathway beneath bridge for access around riverside reserve for walkers and cyclists". When the river is up, start from the Glasgow Street end instead and walk the shorter loop inside the reserve, which stays on the protected side of the stop bank. At the far end the track ties into the Blair Athol Walkway, the riverside route that starts at Naish Park and runs along the stop banks of the Clutha, so you can carry straight on upstream if you want a longer morning. Two things before you set off. The reserve is grazed, with sheep run in pasture around the aerodrome, and the airfield is live, so keep the lead short past the strip. Pindone rabbit bait also goes down here in winter, most recently in June 2026 along the railway corridor, and the advice is to avoid the treated area and keep dogs leashed nearby. Warning signs go up beforehand, so read them at the gate.

Graded easy, it climbs about 9 m overall, and takes about 46 min to walk.

Dogs are allowed here, on the lead. This walk is on the map because Petra & Bowzer suggested it, and we checked it against the source above.
