About Kaitoke Walkway
This short walk follows 1.3 km, near Raglan in Waikato.
An easy gravel walkway along the tidal edge of Whāingaroa (Raglan) Harbour, below the southern side of Raglan township. From the East Street access it drops to the water and follows the harbour margin west to Norrie Avenue, close to flat the whole way, which makes it a good short evening walk from town. Side streets come down onto it at several points, so you can join or turn back part way along. The walkway runs in two sections with a short block of Kaitoke Street between them, so there is a couple of minutes on a quiet residential road in the middle. Waikato District Council names Raglan's off-lead areas one by one in the schedule to its dog control bylaw, and this walkway is not among them, so dogs are on lead here. That suits the ground: the path sits a few metres above intertidal mud and sand, and the council's policy asks owners to take all reasonable steps to ensure a dog does not injure, endanger or cause distress to protected wildlife. For off-lead time the same schedule lists Aro Aro Reserve on the corner of Wallis and John Streets, the beach west of the Papahua holiday park, the Wainui Reserve stretch down to Ngarunui Beach, and the beach areas at the wharf, the Cliffs, Cox's Bay, Lorenzen Bay, The Doughboys and Moonlight Bay. Dogs are prohibited at all times in the Kopua camping ground, the domain, the playground and the Opotoru inlet foreshore between the footbridge and the boat ramp.
