About Kauri Glen Reserve
Kauri Glen Reserve covers 0.5 km, near Northcote in Auckland.
Auckland Council puts Kauri Glen Reserve at 15 Kauri Glen Road in Northcote, and the walk mapped here is the through track from that entrance: down the western side of the glen, across the treetop boardwalk and out at Raymond Terrace, a little over half a kilometre one way. The boardwalk is the reason to come, 60 m of timber sitting 18 m above the forest floor on three glulam bridges, built to keep feet and paws off the roots of kauri and tānekaha that are three to four hundred years old. The Tui Glen Road entrance joins the same track at the boardwalk, and the council’s own path page starts its Kauri Glen Path there at 57 Tui Glen Road. Dogs walk these tracks on the lead, and the lead is the kauri protection: the council names dogs alongside people, pigs and goats as major carriers of kauri dieback. The schedule lifts the rest of the reserve to off-leash under control, but the tracks between the Kauri Glen Road, Raymond Terrace and Tui Glen Road entrances are on-leash at all times, and the tracks are where anyone actually walks here. Use the shoe cleaning stations at the reserve entrances on the way in and on the way out, and keep the dog on the formed track and the boardwalk rather than out in the leaf litter. Check the council’s map of open and closed tracks before you leave home, because this network keeps changing: reading the council’s live track layer on 18 August 2026 we counted about 2.3 km of the reserve’s 4.0 km of track open and about 1.6 km closed or temporarily closed, including the permanently closed ground level route that the treetop boardwalk replaced. The line above deliberately holds to the segments the council currently shows open, which is why it runs entrance to entrance rather than looping the whole gully. One thing worth saying plainly: this is Kauri Glen, and it is not a green light for kauri reserves generally. In the same Kaipātiki area the council prohibits dogs outright at Kauri Park, Muriel Fisher Reserve and Søren G Christensen Reserve while they are closed to protect kauri. Street parking is limited, the number 25 bus runs along Onewa Road, and the nearest public toilets are at the Highbury Birkenhead shopping mall.
