About Long Beach (South) Walking Track

Long Beach (South) Walking Track covers 0.4 km, near Port Chalmers in Otago, walked as a loop.

A flat grass track through Long Beach Recreation Reserve leading to Long Beach (Warauwerawera), a sandy surf beach north of Dunedin near Purakaunui. New Zealand sea lions breed here over summer, so dogs must be leashed within 20 m of wildlife.

Graded easy, it climbs about 7 m overall, pitching up to 4 % at its steepest, and takes about 6m to walk.

Dogs are allowed off the lead on this one. DOC’s own wording: “Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times. Dogs must be on a lead within 20 m of wildlife.”.
