This track is in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park above Kaikōura, where dogs need a DOC permit. Apply to the Whakatū / Nelson Visitor Centre ahead of time; a permit can take up to five days and is not issued on the track.

About Mt Fyffe Hut Track

Mt Fyffe Hut Track is a long walk of 5.4 km, near Kaikōura in Canterbury.

Climbs the 4WD track from the Mt Fyffe carpark above Kaikōura to Mt Fyffe Hut at around 1,100 m, with the whole peninsula and the Seaward Kaikōuras spread out below. The permit comes with a condition most walks never carry: a current sheep-measles (Taenia ovis) vet certificate, treated more than 2 days and less than 1 month before entry, carried and shown on request. Beyond the hut a poled route continues to the 1,602 m summit for experienced trampers; the mapped walk here ends at the hut.

Expect hard going, with around 919 m of climb, and takes about 2 hr 37 to walk.
