This walk was suggested by the community and checked against the authority quoted above before it was published. The route line comes from official track data. The rule-setter’s own wording: “Thames-Coromandel District Council, Dog Control Bylaw 2023 Te Ture ā-Rōhe mō ngā Kaupapa Kurī, Summary of Schedule 1: Area Rules, Tairua-Pāuanui Community Board Area. The row "Pāuanui Ocean Beach south and associated reserve - area south of Pāuanui Surf Club" carries "Prohibited. Off leash at all other dates and times" in the column headed "From 20 December to 31 January and all holiday weekends, between 9am and 6pm (inclusive)". So dogs are banned from this half of the beach for those six weeks and on holiday weekends between 9am and 6pm, and off leash under control at every other date and time, which matches the district-wide line "All Beaches and parts of Beaches, excluding areas described elsewhere in this schedule: Off leash". The half north of the surf club is a separate row in the same table with a much longer closure, Labour weekend to 1 March, so do not carry this verdict up the beach. Off the sand, "All Public Places excluding Beaches" and "Roads including pedestrian areas, margins and car parks" are on leash, and children’s playgrounds and sports surfaces are prohibited at all times”. Evidence: the rule-setter’s own published wording. How we check dog rules.

About Pāuanui Ocean Beach South

Pāuanui Ocean Beach South covers 1.5 km, near Pāuanui in Waikato.

Pāuanui Ocean Beach runs about 2.6 km down the seaward side of the sandspit, and this page covers the southern half of it: 1.5 km of open sand from the surf club south to where the beach ends and the coast turns rocky. Park anywhere along the beach accesses off Pāuanui Boulevard, drop onto the sand and turn right. There is nothing to navigate and no gate, and at 3 km there and back it is a straightforward hour with a dog. The reason this walk stops at the surf club is that the bylaw does. Thames-Coromandel splits Pāuanui Ocean Beach into two named areas at the Pāuanui Surf Club and gives them different closed seasons. South of the club, where you are here, dogs are prohibited from 20 December to 31 January and on holiday weekends between 9am and 6pm, and off leash the rest of the year. North of the club, all the way around the point to the Royal Billy Point boat ramp, the closure runs from Labour weekend right through to 1 March, plus Easter and ANZAC weekends. That is more than three extra months. The two halves look like one beach when you are standing on it, so if you walk north past the club in November or February, the rule changes under your feet. Outside those windows this is off leash and under control, which on a firm open beach with the surf on one side is about as easy as dog walking gets. Autumn and winter are the pick. If you are here in the closed six weeks and still want the dog out, the same schedule sets aside two Pāuanui reserves as off leash at all dates and times: Pleasant Point Reserve south of the bollards to Ajax Head, and the western side of South End Reserve. Those stay open when the beach does not. Two more lines from the same schedule are worth knowing before you go. The Tairua Harbour Estuary on the sheltered side of the spit, from Royal Billy Point round to Pleasant Point, carries the same 20 December to 31 January closure as this beach, and both boat ramps are on leash all year regardless. And everything off the sand, the roads, the car parks and the reserve margins you cross to get here, is on leash. Clip on as you leave the beach and you will not get it wrong.

Graded easy, it stays flat overall, and takes about 18 min to walk.

Dogs are welcome here. This walk is on the map because Inge & Pip suggested it, and we checked it against the source above.
