Pearl Harbour Lakefront Track

This short walk follows 1.4 km, near Manapouri in Southland.

The walk here is the Lake 2 Lake Trail along the Manapouri lakefront, and it is not a beach walk. That distinction is the whole of this page, so take it first. The trail runs a little under 1.4 km of flat gravel between the Waiau Street end at Pearl Harbour and the top of Frasers Beach, with the lake and the Kepler tops through the trees beside you, so figure on about 2.8 km and half an hour each way if you walk it out and back. Dogs are on the lead the whole way. Southland District Council maps Manapouri village as a Dog Control Urban Area with dogs on lead, and its Manapouri sheet in the Dog Control Bylaw 2025 map series carries a callout pointing straight at this lakefront: including Frasers Beach Road Carriageway, but not including Frasers Beach Foreshore (DOC/Fiordland). Reading that sheet class by class, there is no dog exercise area anywhere on it, so there is nowhere in this village to let a dog off the lead. Now the part that catches people out, and it catches them out because a widely shared tourism listing for this route describes an easy walk along the beach and tags it dog friendly. The beach is not walkable with a dog. Frasers Beach, the foreshore below it and the water of Lake Manapouri are all inside Fiordland National Park, and DOC says no dogs on that ground, permit or nothing. Say it plainly: the water counts. A dog trotting down the sand for a swim off Frasers Beach on a hot day has entered a national park, and that is the single easiest way to break this rule without meaning to. Keep to the formed trail and the road corridor and you are on the right side of the line, but the margin along Frasers Beach Road is genuinely tight. The council callout resolves the carriageway itself in favour of the on-lead area, while the park boundary sits at roughly the seaward edge of that road: a few metres off the tarmac toward the water and you are in the park. The line mapped here holds the trail, which stays about 40 m clear of the beach at its closest point and never touches it. Two other Pearl Harbour walks turn up on the same listings and neither one is an extension of this. The Circle Track and the Pearl Harbour to Hope Arm track both sit across the Waiau on the south bank, reached by water taxi or private boat to the jetty opposite Pearl Harbour, and both are inside Fiordland National Park. DOC's own page for the Circle Track states no dogs. The boat is not the next leg of this walk. Parking, toilets and the wharf are at the Waiau Street end, and roughly half a kilometre of Waiau Street links the trail end to the Pearl Harbour jetty, on the lead like everything else in the village and not part of the mapped line. One more thing worth knowing at that wharf: we found no pesticide operation over this walk or the township on DOC's layers, but the nearest two are both reached from Pearl Harbour. Rona Island, 9.9 km out, holds brodifacoum in bait stations with a caution period running to the end of 2026, and Pomona Island is 12.2 km out. Both are national park islands where a dog is not allowed in any case.

Graded easy, it stays flat overall, and takes about 16 min to walk.
