Inland Track, Queen Elizabeth Park covers 1.6 km, near Paekākāriki in Wellington.
The inland spine of Queen Elizabeth Park: from the Memorial Lookout above Paekākāriki the track lifts onto stabilised dune ridges and runs north up the middle of the park, with Mana Island and Kāpiti Island out to sea most of the way. Greater Wellington calls it 40 minutes, and the line mapped here is that main section, 1.6 km ending on the park road at the Coastal Track junction a few hundred metres short of the Whareroa Road entrance, so you can turn back or loop home down the coast. It is a wide, well kept track that doubles as a bridleway, so expect horses and the odd bike. Dogs are welcome right across this park under control, with two exceptions worth knowing before you set off: the Te Ara o Tipapa Loop and the Dune Swamp Loop are no dogs, and the park map marks them. Pick up after your dog, every time. Two bits of local lore to correct while we are here. This is not the old tramway, which is the Wellington Tramway Museum line running from the Mackays Crossing entrance, and the heritage walk in the park is the Yankee Trail between the two US Marines memorials. It does not cross farmland either: that description belongs to the neighbouring Whareroa Stream Loop. The one thing to get right before you drive up is the name. Whareroa Farm, over State Highway 1 at Mackays Crossing, is a different property managed by DOC where no dogs are allowed at all, and its farmed areas close to visitors for lambing and calving from 18 July to 30 September. The two entrances share a motorway exit, so stay on the western side of the highway. There is no lambing rule inside Queen Elizabeth Park itself.
Graded easy, it stays flat overall, and takes about 20 min to walk.
