This walk was suggested by the community and checked against the authority quoted above before it was published. The route line comes from official track data. The rule-setter’s own wording: “Dogs on a lead. Taupō District Council is the land manager here, and its Control of Dogs Bylaw 2021 sets the rule at clause 7, verbatim: "Every owner of a dog shall keep that dog under control on a leash in public places at all times (except in the Rural Environment or within the Mapara Valley Structure Plan Area under the Taupo District Plan, and in Dog Exercise Areas as specified in the Second Schedule)." This track is in neither schedule. The First Schedule of places where dogs are prohibited names "The beach area at Acacia Bay North", and the Second Schedule of off lead exercise areas names the "Stormwater gully between Acacia Bay Road and Reeves Road". The walkway itself is in neither list, so the clause 7 on lead default applies. DOC has no page for this track and is no longer the land manager, so there is no Reserves Act no dogs rule running against it. Council bylaw and schedules read 27 August 2026. Note that the prohibition on the Acacia Bay North beach is year round and applies even on a lead, so keep Jack and everyone else on the track itself and off that beach”. About Rangatira Point Track
Rangatira Point Track is a short walk of 1.8 km, near Taupō in Waikato.
This is the easy lakeside walk at Acacia Bay, a few minutes west of Taupō, and it is one of the better short walks in the district to do with a dog. The track threads through native bush right along the edge of Lake Taupō, opening out every so often onto the water with views back across to the town and Mount Tauhara. It is close to flat, the surface is good, and there are three car parks spaced along Acacia Bay Road, so you can make it as short or as long as you feel like on the day. The line we have drawn runs about 1.85 km one way, from the first car park around the shore towards Rangatira Point. That is the section that is properly mapped. The track does carry on beyond it to Whakamoenga Point, where the flat volcanic rocks and the long view south to the Tongariro mountains are the reward, and the walk out there is roughly another half hour. That last stretch passes through private property on a marked public access line, so stay on the track and read the signs. Kellie sorted the dog rule on this one, and it took some doing. Every map that still shows Rangatira Point as a scenic reserve is out of date, which is why the answer has been muddled for years. She went to the land tenure, we went to the council bylaw, and the two agree: this is a Taupō District Council walkway and dogs are welcome on a lead. One thing to watch. The beach at Acacia Bay North is a year round no dogs area under the council's own bylaw, on a lead or not, so it is worth knowing where the track ends and that beach begins. The lake edge along the walkway itself is fine, and on a hot day it is a good spot for a dog to get wet.
