The permit requirement shown here is DOC’s own published rule for this land. The DOC office and signs on the day have the final say. DOC’s own wording: “Dogs with a DOC permit for recreational hunting or management purposes only. (DOC, dog access field for Taumarumaru Scenic Reserve Walk)”. Evidence: a hand-checked correction against the authority. How we check dog rules.

Good to know

A DOC dog permit is required before any dog walks here. DOC codes this land for the hunting-dog permit, so it is not a casual dog walk. Ask the DOC office before planning to bring a dog. DOC's dog access field for this walk reads "Dogs with a DOC permit for recreational hunting or management purposes only", and that permit covers hunting or management work, not a general dog walk. DOC's own description of the reserve on the same page says dogs are allowed on a lead, so ring the Kaitaia office before you count on bringing yours.

About Taumarumaru Scenic Reserve Walk

This short track follows 1.9 km as a loop, near Taipa in Northland.

Worth knowing before you drive out: DOC gives two different dog rules for this reserve on the same page. The dog access field says permit only, for recreational hunting or management, while the description lower down says twice that dogs are allowed provided they are on a lead at all times, and points at the Northland reserve bylaws. We show the stricter one, because the dog access field is what sets access everywhere else on this site. Ring DOC's Kaitaia office before you go if you are counting on the on-lead reading, and tell us what they say and we will put it up.

Expect easy going, with around 19 m of climb, pitching up to 8 % at its steepest, and takes about 0.5–1 hr to walk.

Along the way there are beach walking, big views, and historic sites. A DOC dog permit is required before any dog walks here. Arrange it with the managing DOC office ahead of your trip. Walkers rate it 4.4 / 5 across 57 reviews.
