This is the first kilometre of the lakeside path that carries on south to the bird sanctuary and the Lake Te Anau control gates. DOC confirmed on 26 August 2026 that the longer Lakeside Walk on to the Kepler Track carpark carries the same rule, dogs on a leash, and its page for that walk now says so. About Te Anau Lakefront Walk: Visitor Centre to Ivon Wilson Reserve
Te Anau Lakefront Walk: Visitor Centre to Ivon Wilson Reserve is a point-to-point of 1.1 km, near Te Anau in Southland.
An easy paved lakefront walk from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre at 1 Lakefront Drive, running about a kilometre south along the edge of Lake Te Anau to the road opposite Ivon Wilson Recreation Reserve. DOC grades it easy to intermediate and allows about 15 minutes. DOC's own words for the rule are "Dogs on a leash only". The reserve across the road is the reason to keep going: 35 hectares of native and exotic planting managed by Southland District Council, with several paths out to Lake Henry, a children's fishery stocked with rainbow and brown trout, and a mountain bike track. DOC's own words for it are that it is a good park for walking your dog. Toilets sit near the entrance, and fishing licences for children are available at no charge from the visitor centre. This kilometre is also the start of the Lakeside Walk, the same path carrying on south past Punanga Manu o Te Anau, the bird sanctuary, to the Kepler Track carpark and the Lake Te Anau control gates, and from there it becomes the Lake2Lake Trail down the Waiau River. For years the stretch between Ivon Wilson and the control gates was a genuine muddle: DOC's website said no dogs while DOC's own sign at the visitor centre end showed a dog on a lead as permitted, and a DOC panel at the bird sanctuary asked walkers to keep dogs under control. We asked the Te Anau visitor centre which was current, and on 26 August 2026 its Team Lead Eilish Graham answered that the website was the part that was wrong: "We have now updated our website to match all the signage. So, dogs are allowed on a leash between the DOC visitor centre to the Kepler Car park on the Lake2Lake track." DOC's page for the Visitor Centre to Kepler Track Carpark Walk now reads "Dogs on a leash only". So the whole 3.5 km of lakeside path is walkable with a dog on the lead, and the sign Daniel photographed was right all along. What is not in doubt: the far side of the control gates and of the Rainbow Reach swing bridge is Fiordland National Park, where a dog is an offence under the National Parks Act, so no dog crosses either bridge. We first drew this walk along the town lakefront north of the visitor centre by mistake; Daniel and Zola's photos of the signs put it right.
Graded easy, it stays flat overall, and takes about 12 min to walk.
