This walk was suggested by the community and checked against the authority quoted above before it was published. The route line comes from official track data. The rule-setter’s own wording: “Palmerston North City Council, Dog Control Policy 2024, read from the council's own PDF on 7 September 2026. Clause 20, Dog Exercise Areas: “Dog Exercise areas are locations where dogs can be run at large, that is, the dog may be off the leash but under the immediate control of their owner at all times.” Its list names at (o) “Turitea Stream Esplanade Reserves (Green Corridors)”, and both green corridor legs of this loop run through those reserves, so your dog can come off the lead on them. The two road legs are not covered: clause 19, Dog On Leash Areas, lists at (a) “All streets, roads and footpaths within the District except those within prohibited areas or dog exercise areas”, so the lead goes back on for Turitea Road and Valley Views Road. Clause 20 adds that being able to exercise a dog without a leash “does not absolve owners from their obligations under the Act, to ensure their dog is kept under control, and to carry a leash at all times with the dog in a public place”. Valley Views Loop covers 3.5 km, near Palmerston North in Manawatū-Whanganui, walked as a loop.
A 3.5 km suburban loop on the southern edge of Palmerston North, linking two green corridors along the Turitea Stream with the two roads that join them up. Julie sent it in and called it a 45 minute loop. We make the line 3.55 km, which at a walking pace is about 45 minutes, so she had it right to the minute. Start at the cul de sac end of Valley Views Road and drop into the Valley Views green corridor, which follows the stream down to Turitea Road. Turn along Turitea Road for roughly 600 metres, then pick up the Turitea green corridor, a short unnamed gravel path that runs back through the esplanade reserve. It pops you out at the top of Valley Views Road up a flight of gravel steps, and from there it is a straight walk down the road to the car. The steps are the one thing to know in advance: they rule this loop out for a pram, and a dog that dislikes open treads will want a hand. Neither corridor is signposted the way the council's named walkways are, which is why this one is hard to find on a map. Worth saying plainly, because the names collide: the Turitea Green Corridor Walkway that the council publishes is a different walk about 1.5 km south of here. This is Julie's local loop, and the corridor legs on it are short connectors rather than a formal walkway. The lead comes off in the corridors and goes back on for the roads. Palmerston North lists the Turitea Stream esplanade reserves as a dog exercise area, so both green stretches are off lead under immediate control, and Turitea Road and Valley Views Road are on lead like every road in the district. It is a stream and a suburb rather than a big view, but it is flat, quiet and quick, and half of it is off lead.
