Auckland Council’s own wording: “Auckland Council's Policy on Dogs 2025 lists "Waikaraka Walkway: End of Boardwalk to 213 Hugo Johnston Drive" among the areas where dogs are allowed under control off a leash (section 2.11.2(18)), and the council's Waikaraka Park page gives the same zone as "Manukau Foreshore East cycleway, Off-leash, All times, applies to the area from the end of boardwalk to 213 Johnson Drive". The boardwalk itself and the rest of Waikaraka Park stay on-leash, sports fields are prohibited, and Waikaraka Park Cemetery is closed to dogs at all times”. About Waikaraka Walkway
This moderate-length walk follows 2.4 km, in Auckland.
The Waikaraka Walkway runs along the Manukau Harbour shoreline on the southern edge of Onehunga, a wide flat concrete path with the water on one side and the old industrial belt on the other. Starting from the Onehunga Harbour Road end, you cross a short wooden boardwalk, then the path opens out and runs east past the back of Waikaraka Cemetery and Waikaraka Park, and keeps going to 213 Hugo Johnston Drive in Southdown. It is 2.4 km one way on our line. There is parking at both ends and bins along the way, and it takes a pushchair or a bike without complaint. The lead comes off at the end of the boardwalk. Auckland Council names this stretch twice, once in the Policy on Dogs 2025 as "Waikaraka Walkway: End of Boardwalk to 213 Hugo Johnston Drive" and once on the Waikaraka Park page as the Manukau Foreshore East cycleway, off-leash at all times. That makes it one of the longer continuous off-leash paths in central Auckland. Before the boardwalk end, and anywhere else in Waikaraka Park, the lead stays on, and the eight sports fields and the speedway are out of bounds to dogs at all times. Waikaraka Park Cemetery is tucked in behind the park and dogs are prohibited there at all times, so stay on the foreshore path rather than cutting through. If you carry on west past the boardwalk towards Onehunga Lagoon you leave the off-leash zone: the footpaths along Orpheus Drive are on-leash, and the eastern end of Taumanu Reserve, from the overbridge across to the Manukau Cruising Club, is closed to dogs at all times to protect wildlife. Onehunga Bay Reserve at the far end, also called Onehunga Lagoon, is off-leash again, so the walk is off-leash at both ends with an on-leash and partly closed stretch in the middle. The harbour edge here is tidal mudflat with roosting birds, and the path sits alongside working industrial sites. Recall matters on the open section. Check the water before letting a dog in.
