The rule-setter’s own wording: “Christchurch City Council's own page for the Barnett Park Cave Loop Track lists the rule under Dogs: "Must be kept on a leash". (Christchurch City Council, Parks and gardens, Port Hills, Bridle Path, Barnett Park Cave Loop Track, fetched 30 August 2026.) The council's Dog Control Policy 2025 says the same thing in more detail for Barnett Park Conservation Area: "Dogs must be on a leash to protect conservation values and grazing stock up the hill at the back of the park. The grassed, flat area near the Bay View Road carpark, and near the sports ground, is an under effective control / off-leash area." About Barnett Park Cave Loop
This moderate-length track follows 3.9 km as a loop, near Christchurch in Canterbury.
Worth knowing where the off-lead ground actually is. The council maps the flat grass by the Bay View Road carpark and the sports ground as an under effective control area, so a dog can be off the lead down there, but the moment you start up either side of the valley towards the cave you are in the leashed part, protecting conservation values and grazing stock. The council times the loop at 2.5 km and an hour and a quarter from Barnett Park, walkable in either direction, with a steady climb on both sides of the main valley to the staircase up to the cave.
Graded moderate, it climbs about 159 m overall, pitching up to 25 % at its steepest, and takes about 1–1.5 hr to walk.
