The rule-setter’s own wording: “Christchurch City Council's page for the Drayton Reserve Track lists the reserve's dog status as "Under effective control", but the lead still goes on to walk the track. The council's Dog Control Policy 2025, clause 6.2.2, is explicit: "Dogs must be on a leash on paths in greenspace areas where dogs are allowed", and "if a path, shared path or formed track runs through an area where dogs can be off-leash, dogs can continue to be exercised under effective control near the path, but must be leashed if travelling along the path." So the two council pages are not really in conflict. The reserve is classed under effective control, which is the council's default for ground it has not listed as leashed, but the 2025 policy leashes dogs travelling along any formed track in a greenspace area regardless of how the surrounding ground is classed. Off the track and near it, under effective control is the standard. Along the track, the lead goes on. The council times it at 1.1 km and 30 minutes one way, rising gently through the reserve from near the first hairpin on Glenstrae Road and finishing with a zig-zag up to Mount Pleasant Road, with a lot of branch tracks joining from nearby roads and properties.
Graded moderate, it climbs about 158 m overall, pitching up to 16 % at its steepest, and takes about 1–1.5 hr to walk.
