About Beach Road North
Beach Road North covers 4.5 km, near Oamaru in Otago.
The old coast road between Oamaru and the Kakanui coast, running along the clifftops south of the North Otago Golf Club with the Pacific below the whole way. Since August 2024 the middle of it has been closed to vehicles by coastal erosion, which is exactly what makes it a good walk: about 4.5 km of quiet sealed road each way with wide sea views, seabirds working the swell, and almost no traffic beyond the short open stubs at either end. Park near the golf course at the Oamaru end and walk south; the road climbs gently along the cliff edge before dropping toward the Old Bones corner, where vehicles come back in from the Kakanui side. Turn around wherever suits, the full out and back is about 9 km of easy walking. The dog stays on the lead here, both on the road and on the beach below it. Waitaki District Council's dog policy puts all public streets on lead, and it names this exact stretch of coast besides: Beach Road beach from the North Otago Golf course to Thousand Acre Road is a lead-only area in its own right. Take the rule seriously at both ends, because the neighbouring coast is closed to dogs entirely: Bushy Beach and Cape Wanbrow, just north, are penguin habitat where dogs are prohibited, and the Kakanui River mouth and penguin areas to the south are prohibited too. This road and its beach are the dog-legal corridor between them. Respect the closure infrastructure while you walk. The road is closed to vehicles because the cliff edge is actively eroding, there are slips with safety fencing part way along, and the council has deferred a decision on the road's long-term future while it maintains public access for as long as the erosion allows, so the ground rules here could change. Stay on the seaward side only where the road itself runs, keep back from the cliff edge, and keep the dog close past the farm paddocks that border the road, which carry stock for much of the year.
