About Cape Foulwind Walkway from Lighthouse Road

Cape Foulwind Walkway from Lighthouse Road is an out-and-back of 6.0 km, near Westport in West Coast.

The lead is not a formality on this one. The viewpoint above Tauranga Bay looks down on a New Zealand fur seal breeding colony, and DOC asks everyone to stay at least 20 m back and to keep dogs on a lead the whole way. Seals haul out on the rocks and sometimes well up off the water, so a dog ranging ahead can meet one before you have. They are protected native animals and they defend themselves, which makes this a bite risk for your dog as much as a disturbance for them. Keep to the formed track, keep the lead short at the viewing platforms, and give any seal you pass a wide berth.

Expect easy going, with around 127 m of climb, pitching up to 15 % at its steepest, and takes about 1.5–2 hr to walk.

The track takes in beach walking, big views, wildlife, and historic sites. Dogs are allowed here, on the lead. Walkers rate it 4.7 / 5 across 505 reviews.
