Worth knowing what does NOT set the rule here: this ground sits in the Hokitika hunting block, and unlike some other DOC blocks that page states no dog conditions of its own, it only says to refer to the DOC website. The whole line is DOC conservation land, the Wanganui / Otira Catchments stewardship area (J33031), checked against DOC's Public Conservation Land layer on 27 August 2026, so the permit from the Hokitika office is what makes a dog lawful on it”. About Cedar Flat Hut to Adventure Bivvy
This moderate-length track follows 2.4 km as a point-to-point, near Hokitika in West Coast.
Short on the map and long on the day. This is the climb out of the Toaroha Valley at Cedar Flat, up onto Adventure Ridge and along to Adventure Bivvy, and the mapped line is only about 2.4 km. Dre put it at 3 to 4 hours, which tells you everything you need to know about the gradient: this is a steep bush climb on a marked route, not a track, and the distance is the least of it. It is leg two of the nine leg round Dre sent us, the Toaroha to Zit Saddle to Kokatahi to Lathrop Saddle to Styx circuit. Leg one, Toaroha Valley to Cedar Flat Hut, is already on the site, so this picks up exactly where that one puts you down. From Cedar Flat the route leaves the valley track a few hundred metres above the hut and goes more or less straight up. DOC grades this ground as expert route in places and the alpine sections of the wider circuit demand real route finding in anything other than fine weather. Adventure Bivvy is a bivvy, so treat it as two bunks and a roof rather than a hut. Dogs need a DOC permit and there is no way around it. Every metre of this is DOC conservation land, part of the Wanganui and Otira Catchments stewardship area, and DOC’s rule for the Toaroha corridor is dogs with a DOC permit only, from the closest office, which is Hokitika. Sort that before you leave, because there is nobody to ask at the road end. From the bivvy the round carries on over Zit Saddle to Top Kokatahi Hut, which Dre reckons is another 3 to 4 hours, and that leg is now on the site too. Same conservation land, same permit, and the same advice about the weather making the decision for you.
