The permit requirement shown here is DOC’s own published rule for this land. The DOC office and signs on the day have the final say. DOC’s own wording: “"Dogs with a DOC permit only. Contact closest DOC office to get a permit." and "For a dog permit contact the Māwhera / Greymouth Office" (DOC, Duffy Creek Route, a Victoria Forest Park track out of Reefton, fetched 29 August 2026). DOC has no page for Golden Fleece Battery Walk by name, but its Public Conservation Land layer puts the walk inside Victoria Forest Park, and DOC's Klondyke Spur Track page in the same park carries the identical wording”. Good to know

A DOC dog permit is required before any dog walks here. Apply to the managing DOC office ahead of time; do not turn up with the dog first. This page used to say "Dogs allowed", inferred from licensed walk data, while further down the same page said the track is in Victoria Forest Park where dogs need a DOC permit. The permit reading is the right one. DOC's Public Conservation Land records put every part of the walk past the roadside carpark inside Victoria Forest Park, a conservation park under section 19 of the Conservation Act (unit L30069), checked at five points along the route on 29 August 2026. DOC publishes no page for Golden Fleece Battery Walk by name, but its pages for the two Victoria Forest Park tracks nearest Reefton, the Duffy Creek Route and the Klondyke Spur Track, both say "Dogs with a DOC permit only. Contact closest DOC office to get a permit.", and both name the Māwhera / Greymouth office. DOC's own rule is that you cannot take a pet onto conservation land without its permission, so where DOC has not published a rule for a track, that silence is not permission.

This track is in Victoria Forest Park, where dogs need a DOC permit. Apply to the Māwhera / Greymouth DOC office ahead of time; a permit can take up to five days and is not issued on the track.
