The lead is the point of this one. The boardwalk runs out over the lagoon wetland, which is the whole reason the birds are here, and DOC lists pied stilt/poaka, South Island pied oystercatcher/torea, New Zealand shoveller/kuruwhengu, grey teal/tete, grey duck/parera and scaup/papango on the water, with the Australasian bittern/matuku-hūrepo in the raupō. The bittern is one of the rarest birds in the country and it does not flush like a duck. It freezes in the reeds and trusts its stripes, so a dog off the boards will be on top of one long before you have seen it. Keep to the boardwalk and keep the lead short. Two other things are worth knowing before you go: DOC warns that the Glenorchy Lagoon section floods in heavy or prolonged rain, so check it after a wet spell, and DOC asks people not to park or start from Glenorchy Paradise Road because it is a hot spot for accidents. Start from the northern end of Glenorchy, off Mull St.
