DOC describes the walk as a boardwalk over wetland with plenty of bird life, and lists pied stilt/poaka, South Island pied oystercatcher/torea, Australasian bittern/matuku-hūrepo, New Zealand shoveller/kuruwhengu, grey teal/tete, grey duck/parera and scaup/papango on it”. Dogs are allowed here. Keep them on the lead, watch for ground-nesting birds and stock, and read the signs at the gate.
About Glenorchy Lagoon Walkway
This moderate-length track follows 3.4 km as a loop, near Glenorchy in Otago.
This is the shorter way round the same lagoon, and DOC leashes it for what lives in the water. The wetland holds pied stilt/poaka, South Island pied oystercatcher/torea, New Zealand shoveller/kuruwhengu, grey teal/tete, grey duck/parera and scaup/papango, and the Australasian bittern/matuku-hūrepo sits in the raupō, one of the rarest birds in New Zealand and one that freezes rather than flying up, so a loose dog reaches it first. Stay on the boardwalk with the lead short and you will see more anyway. DOC also warns that the lagoon section floods in heavy or prolonged rain, and asks people not to park or start from Glenorchy Paradise Road, which is a hot spot for accidents. The start is at the northern end of Glenorchy near Mull St.
Expect easy going, with around 6 m of climb, pitching up to 4 % at its steepest, and takes about 0.5–1 hr to walk.
