About Huriawa Pā Walk
This moderate-length track follows 2.7 km as a loop, near Karitane in Otago.
DOC's line for this one is "Dogs on a leash only", so clip up at the car park and stay clipped. The track starts at the Domain on Barvas Street in Karitane, runs right around Huriawa Peninsula to Karitane beach and comes back through the cemetery to the Domain. DOC calls it 2.4 km and 45 minutes, an easy to intermediate walking track that is fine for children, and there are plaques along the way telling the story of Te Wera's pa and the siege. If you want longer, carry on along the beach from the far end. Three things to keep in mind with a dog. The peninsula is clifftop the whole way round and DOC warns of erosion, land movement and a genuine fall risk, so a lead is doing real work rather than ticking a box. The track has also been damaged by heavy rain, with surface damage and ground movement, and DOC asks you to stay on the formed gravel and follow the signs on the day. And this is private land owned by Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki, so treat it as someone's place: stay on the track, and do not dig or take plants. Worth knowing that dogs on a lead here is not the same answer as the walk next door. Hawksbury lagoon at Waikouaiti, the other DOC walk in this area, is no dogs around the lagoon, so if you searched for Karitane and landed on a no dogs page, that is the one you were reading.
