About Klondyke Spur Track

Near Reefton in Canterbury, Klondyke Spur Track runs 1.9 km.

A steep climb for experienced trampers from the Rahu Saddle to a ridge overlooking the Victoria Range. Dre, who sent this one in with Hazel, describes it exactly: start at the car park and steadily climb up the spur, about 4 to 5 hours for the return trip, which squares with DOC's 2 hr 30 min to the bushline one way. The track is well signposted from SH7 between Reefton and Springs Junction, with good pull offs and parking at the saddle. Once above the bushline the ridge opens up with spectacular views across the Victoria Range, and experienced trampers can carry on along the ridge, drop into the upper basin with its alpine tarns, and follow the Rahu River right branch out to the Klondyke Valley Track for a round trip. DOC's warning is worth repeating word for word: do not attempt to take a low sidle, as this will lead you to dangerous bluffs. The dog rule is DOC's permit rule for Victoria Forest Park: dogs with a DOC permit only, arranged with the Māwhera / Greymouth office before you go. The whole climb is conservation land, Rahu Scenic Reserve at the roadside and forest park above, so make the call before you make the drive.

Expect expert going, with around 616 m of climb, and takes about 1 hr 24 to walk.

A DOC dog permit is required before any dog walks here. Arrange it with the managing DOC office ahead of your trip. This walk is on the map because Dre & Hazel suggested it, and we checked it against the source above.
