The rule-setter’s own wording: “Selwyn District Council's own sign at the Domain Road gate, photographed by Steph in September 2026: the board carries a dog on lead pictogram alongside no bikes and no camping. Steph reports the same thing from walking it, so the lead stays on here. Worth being straight about the limits of that: the council's website and its dog control bylaw appendix have been unreachable from us for several days, so we have not been able to read SDC's published wording for this domain, and the sign on the gate is the best source we have. If the bylaw turns out to designate the domain off leash we will change this and say so. Until then the sign is the rule, and it is the one thing a ranger would go by anyway. Kowai Pass Domain covers 1.0 km, near Springfield in Canterbury.
A quiet 1 km walk through Kowai Pass Domain at Springfield, at the foot of Porters Pass, running from Domain Road out to the Rewi Alley Memorial. It is about 2.1 km there and back, or you can make a loop of it by returning along Domain Road, which is how Steph walks it. Give it 30 minutes either way. It is flat, it is sheltered by shelterbelts most of the way, and it is a genuinely easy walk in a part of Canterbury where most of the options are not. Start at the domain entrance on Domain Road, by the tennis courts and the playground, which is the obvious place to leave the car and a good spot if you have children along as well as a dog. The path leaves the road about 130 metres west of the courts and runs northwest through the domain on a metalled surface a couple of metres wide, so it handles a pram and it handles wet weather better than the grass does. At the far end it reaches the Rewi Alley Memorial, with a short loop of track around it. One naming note, because it is easy to get tangled. Steph sent this in as Ruru Alley, and the council's own asset register calls it the Rewi Alley Memorial. Rewi Alley was born in Springfield in 1897 and spent sixty years in China, and the memorial at the end of this path is to him. Same track, and Steph's description of it was accurate to the metre. The lead stays on. The council's board at the Domain Road gate shows a dog on lead, and Steph confirms it from the ground. There is no water on the track, the shelterbelts mean it can be colder than the car park suggests, and if you carry on up the road you are into open high country very quickly.
