This walk comes from licensed public walk data and is being progressively confirmed against the authorities. Signs on the day always win. The rule-setter’s own wording: “The Department of Conservation publishes the rule for this track by name, and it is one line: "Dogs must be on leash." DOC's page gives the reason the lead stays on even though the reserve is council land now: "Access to Mt Iron Scenic reserve crosses private land", and "The landowners have agreed that dogs are allowed on the track, but they must be on a leash." The administering body changed on 23 January 2026, when Queenstown Lakes District Council announced that "following the official vesting of land from DOC under the Reserves Act 1977, QLDC is now the administering body of approximately 55 hectares of reserve land, which includes the State Highway (SH) 84 Mount Iron carpark and the Mount Iron Scenic Reserve", on top of the roughly 100 ha of Mount Iron Recreation Reserve it already managed. That vesting does not unclip the lead here. The access land is private and the landowners' agreement is the more specific rule, and it says leashed. Worth knowing before you go. The lead stays on for the whole climb, and the reason sits at the bottom rather than the top: the way up crosses private land, and the landowners' agreement is what lets dogs on the track at all. Queenstown Lakes District Council became the administering body for the reserve land in January 2026, so the signs at the gate are the thing to read on the day.
