Auckland Council’s own wording: “Auckland Council's rules for Muriwai Regional Park: northern beach areas are off-leash at all times, "the area from north of the surf tower". All other areas are on-leash at all times, which the council lists as the grassed and picnic areas, Mitchelson Lookout Track and the "Muriwai Beach Loop Track (excluding Muriwai Beach northern section where dogs allowed off-leash)". Dogs are prohibited at all times on the beach south of the surf tower and on everything seaward of Waitea Road, including the gannet colony, Otakamiro Point, Flat Rock and Maukatia (Maori Bay), and at the playground, tennis courts and pump track”. About Muriwai Beach Loop
Muriwai Beach Loop is a loop of 4.8 km, near Waimauku in Auckland.
The loop is a leashed walk with an off-lead stretch in the middle of it. Auckland Council splits Muriwai at the surf tower: everything north of it is off-leash at any time, everything south of it is closed to dogs altogether, and the tracks, dunes and grass on either side stay on-leash. So the beach section of this loop north of the tower is where the lead can come off, and it goes back on when you turn inland. The council asks walkers to follow the rules on its website even where a sign on the ground says something else.
Expect easy going, with around 23 m of climb, pitching up to 6 % at its steepest, and takes about 1–1.5 hr to walk.
