Onemana Beach

This short walk follows 1.4 km, near Onemana in Waikato.

Onemana is the quiet one. A single crescent of sand about 1.4 km long below a small clifftop settlement between Whangamatā and Ōpoutere, with a stream at the southern end, rocks at both points and almost nobody on it outside January. Park at the beach reserve off Onemana Drive and walk down; the whole beach is in front of you and there is nothing to navigate. The dog rule here is stricter than the rest of the Coromandel and it is worth reading twice. Thames-Coromandel names the stretch south of Castle Rock specifically, and for that area dogs are prohibited from Labour weekend right through to 1 March, plus the Easter and ANZAC holiday weekends. Not restricted, not on leash, prohibited, for four months. Outside that window dogs are welcome but on leash. Almost every other beach in this district defaults to off leash out of season; Onemana does not, and getting that backwards is an easy fine. The bylaw draws its line at Castle Rock and only names the southern side, which means the beach north of the rock falls back to the district-wide off leash rule. We have published the whole walk at the stricter southern rule rather than guess, because Castle Rock is not marked on any public map we could find and a boundary you cannot see on the ground is not one to rely on. If you know the beach and know where the rock sits, tell us and we will split the page properly. Inge, who suggested this walk, also pointed us at the Onemana community's own wildlife pages. This is a coast with dotterels and oystercatchers nesting above the tide line in spring and summer, which is the reason the closure runs as long as it does. A lead in the shoulder season is not a formality here.

Graded easy, it climbs about 55 m overall, and takes about 22 min to walk.
