This walk was suggested by the community and checked against the authority quoted above before it was published. The route line comes from official track data. The rule-setter’s own wording: “Thames-Coromandel District Council Dog Control Bylaw 2023, Summary of Schedule 1 Area Rules for the Whangamatā Community Board Area, read 28 August 2026. “Ōpoutere Beach - entire Beach excluding southern end” is listed under “On leash and under control at all dates and times”. The southern end is a separate and much stricter line: “Ōpoutere Beach south - Sandspit and Wharekawa Estuary and south end bush, south from the point at which the car park bridge crosses the stream and the southernmost Beach access but excluding the loop track (loop track on leash)” is listed as “Prohibited at all dates and times”. The schedule's district-wide line puts all beaches off leash except “areas described elsewhere in this schedule”, and Ōpoutere is described elsewhere, so the leash rule here is the council's own specific answer rather than a default. Our line runs north from the beach access at -37.10490, which is seaward and north of the car park bridge the bylaw names as the boundary, so no part of this walk is inside the prohibited area”. About Ōpoutere Beach
Ōpoutere Beach covers 2.2 km, near Whangamatā in Waikato.
About 4.3 km return from the car park at the end of Ōpoutere Beach Road, over the stream on the boardwalk, through the pines and out onto one of the least built up ocean beaches on the Coromandel. Ten minutes of walking gets you to the sand, and then it is open beach as far north as you feel like going. From the car park the boardwalk crosses the stream and a well made track runs east through the pine forest for about 700 m, sandy underfoot and flat the whole way, before it climbs the last few metres of dune and drops you onto the beach. We have drawn the beach leg north for about 1.4 km, which makes a comfortable couple of hours with a dog, but the sand carries on for several kilometres past our turnaround and there is nothing stopping you walking further. Surf on this coast is real surf and there are no patrols, so it is a beach for paddling and stick throwing on the wet sand rather than swimming out. The important thing at Ōpoutere is which way you turn at the bottom of the dune. Turn left, north, and you are on the on leash beach this page describes. Turn right, south, and within a few hundred metres you are on the sandspit at the mouth of the Wharekawa Estuary, which is one of the country's better New Zealand dotterel and variable oystercatcher breeding sites and is closed to dogs completely, at every date and time of the year. The council draws that boundary at the bridge you walked across on the way in, so it starts effectively at the car park. Do not take a dog south, not on a lead, not carried, not for a minute. North of the bridge the rule is a lead, and that is Thames-Coromandel District Council's specific listing for this beach rather than a guess. It is worth knowing that most Coromandel beaches in the same schedule are off leash by default, so Ōpoutere is the exception and not the pattern. There are no bins and no water at the car park, so bring bags and bring a bottle, and take everything back out with you.
