The rule-setter’s own wording: “Horowhenua District Council lists where dogs go on and off a lead in one table, introduced with its own line: "This page contains a full list of where dogs can be exercised on and off leash, as well as areas where dogs are prohibited. These are set out in the Dog Control Bylaw 2025." The table's columns are Area, Leashed and Unleashed, and under Levin, "Prouse Bush" sits in the Leashed column, alongside Maire Park, Western Park and the Tiro Tiro Road Cemetery. So a lead is the rule here, and it is the named rule for this reserve rather than a district default. The Dog Control Bylaw 2025 (adopted 25 June 2025, in force 30 September 2025) carries the same entry in Schedule 2, "Areas where dogs are allowed, leashed and un-leashed". Prouse Bush is not in Schedule 1, the prohibited list, which for Levin covers Parsons Avenue Reserve, Weraroa Reserve, Donnelly Park Sportsgrounds, Solway Park, Playford Park, the Jubilee Park play area, Levin Domain, Waiopehu Reserve and Muaupoko Park. Two district-wide rules still bite wherever you are: the bylaw prohibits dogs within three metres of any children's playground "whether or not the balance of the area is designated as a Dog Exercise Area or a Dog On-leash Area", and on all playing fields and their car parks”. About Prouse Bush Loop Walk
This short track follows 0.8 km as a loop, near Levin in Manawatū-Whanganui.
Kellie and Jack sent the council page that settles this one, and it is a lead here. Prouse Bush is remnant podocarp bush with short tracks through it, the entrance beside 21 Totara Street, and the council lists toilets on site. It is a small loop, about 800 m, so it suits a gentle half hour rather than a workout. If you want Jack off the lead afterwards, Kowhai Park on Queen Street West is the council's unleashed area in Levin, about 2 km away.
Expect easy going, with around 7 m of climb, pitching up to 6 % at its steepest, and takes about 10 min to walk.
