Auckland Council’s own wording: “Auckland Council sets this one out in its own dog table for the park. The entry for Pukekohe Hill Reserve reads “Reserve areas … On-leash All times”, so the lead stays on everywhere in the reserve, every day of the year. There is no off-lead corner here and no seasonal switch. The reserve is not named anywhere in the Auckland Council Policy on Dogs 2025, which matters only in that the policy’s Schedule 1 default for a council park you are not told otherwise about is also on a lead, so both routes to the answer agree. About Pukekohe Hill Reserve
This short walk follows 0.5 km, near Pukekohe in Auckland.
A short, steep climb up the side of Pukekohe Hill to the reserve at the top, and Inge has the appeal of it right: it is a little walk that buys you a big view. From the top you look out over the Pukekohe market gardens, across the Manukau and, on a clear day, north to the city. Our line follows the dirt path for about 500 m one way, so it is a half hour there and back at a gentle pace, less if your dog is pulling you up it. Dogs are welcome on a lead. That is Auckland Council’s own wording for the reserve rather than a rule we have inferred, and it applies to the whole of it at all times. The surface is dirt and it climbs steadily, so it turns greasy after rain and there is no gravel to save you. Boots rather than trainers on a wet week. There is no water on the hill and very little shade once you are out of the trees, which is worth knowing on a hot afternoon with a dark-coated dog. Access and parking are at the end of Anzac Road, and the gate has hours: open 7am to 9pm in summer and 7am to 7pm in winter. Check the closing time before an evening walk, because the gate shuts on the car park rather than on the track. There is a picnic table near the middle of the reserve if you want to make an hour of it.
