Mackenzie District Council’s own wording: “No person shall cause, permit, suffer or allow any dog to enter or remain in any public place unless the dog is kept under continual and sufficient control, which means that the dog is kept leashed at all times”. Dogs are allowed here. Keep them on the lead, watch for ground-nesting birds and stock, and read the signs at the gate.
About Pylon Track
Pylon Track is a long walk of 10.8 km, near Twizel in Canterbury.
A high country traverse along the power pylon line on the Mary Range, running between the Tekapo to Pukaki canal and Hayman Road near the shore of Lake Pukaki. DOC publishes it as 10 km one way, about 2.5 hours, and grades it an intermediate tramping track. The walking is over mature tall tussock and old moraine country full of ephemeral tarns, passing west of Mt Mary, known to Ngai Tahu as Otupaka, with the Southern Alps in view for most of the ridge. It is part of Te Araroa, and DOC's own page for the track says dogs are allowed so long as they are under control at all times. There is no loop, so either walk it out and back at roughly 21 km or leave a second car at the far end.
Graded hard, it climbs about 59 m overall, and takes about 2 hr 15 min to walk.
