Te Henga / Bethells Beach and Waitakere Bay

Auckland Council’s own wording: “Auckland Council Policy on Dogs 2025, clause 2.19.4(2), Te Henga/Bethells Beach, read 3 September 2026. The rule changes as you walk, so it is worth knowing which piece of sand you are on. Waitakere Bay, the beach north of the river mouth: "Dogs are allowed under control on a leash between sunset and sunrise at Waitakere Bay and are allowed under control off a leash at all other times". The main beach south of the Waitakere River, from the surf club along the lagoon to a marker pole about 200 metres south of the surf watch tower: "Dogs are allowed under control on a leash between Labour Weekend and Easter" and "Dogs are allowed under control off a leash between Tuesday after Easter and Friday before Labour Weekend between sunrise and sunset". From that marker pole to the small headland at the southern end, on leash at all times. The carpark, the cafe and the track down to the lagoon and beach are on leash all year. Dogs are PROHIBITED at all times on O’Neills Bay, south of the small headland, in the Te Henga Recreation Reserve, and on all other parts of Te Henga Park including the dunes, which the council’s park page extends to the Te Henga walkway, the Lake Wainamu track, the streambed, the lake and the lake margin. That whole clause sits under the heading "Dogs are prohibited in the following areas for the protection of wildlife", and Te Henga is a nesting beach, so watch for temporary signage and give any roped off area a wide berth”. About Te Henga / Bethells Beach and Waitakere Bay
Te Henga / Bethells Beach and Waitakere Bay covers 2.9 km, in Auckland.
A flat 2.9 km out and back on the black sand at Te Henga, on Auckland’s west coast, done in the two directions the beach actually splits into. Nicolas and Belle sent it in and recorded the line: out of the Bethells Road carpark, down the beach access track past the lagoon, north up Waitakere Bay and back, then south along the main beach and back to the car. It takes about 45 minutes at a wander, and there is no hill in it worth the name. The northern half is the reason to come. Waitakere Bay is the stretch north of the Waitakere River mouth, and the council has it off leash from sunrise to sunset, which is as good as it gets on this coast. The southern half, the main beach below the surf club, is off leash too for most of the year, but it goes on leash from Labour Weekend through to Easter when the beach is busy. The carpark, the cafe and the access track are on leash whatever the season, so the lead goes on before you open the car door and comes off once you are on the sand. The limits here matter more than usual, because they are bird closures rather than housekeeping. Dogs are prohibited on O’Neills Bay over the headland, everywhere south of the small headland at the far end of the beach, in the Te Henga Recreation Reserve, and on the dunes, the Te Henga walkway and the whole Lake Wainamu track including the streambed and the lake margin. In practice the sand and the access track are yours and the vegetated ground either side is not. If there is temporary signage or a roped off patch, that will be a nest. This is a west coast surf beach and it behaves like one. The Waitakere River spreads into a lagoon behind the beach and shifts with the tide, so look at what the crossing is doing before you commit a dog to it, and mind the rip at the mouth. There is a carpark off Bethells Road with toilets and a cafe by the entrance, the gate opens at 7am, and there is no mobile coverage down here at all.
Graded easy, it climbs about 30 m overall, and takes about 37 min to walk.
