Top Crawford Hut to Browning Bivouac over Lathrop Saddle is a point-to-point of 3.8 km, near Hokitika in West Coast.
Leg six of Dre's round, Top Crawford Hut over Lathrop Saddle to Browning Bivouac. DOC puts it at 3 hr 30 min to 4 hr 30 min and Dre puts it at 3.5 to 4 hours, so his time sits inside DOC's band again. It is only 3.8 km, and every one of those minutes is the climb and the scree, not the distance. From the hut you head downstream to just before the junction of the two branches of Crawford Creek, cross to the true right and look for the large orange triangle. Orange markers take you through a tussock and scrub covered gut, and after a few hundred metres the track starts climbing steeply through scrub covered bluffs until it tops out on a small terrace. From there a few poles mark the route, which climbs and sidles up and across steep scree slopes heading north to north-east until you reach Lathrop Saddle. Marker poles from the northern end of the saddle lead down a steep spur to Browning Bivouac, and DOC's warning is that they are easy to miss in mist. That is worth planning for with a dog: the descent off the saddle is the one place on this leg where losing the poles matters. The profile is the whole story. You start at about 860 m, gain 691 m to top out at 1551 m on Lathrop Saddle 2.75 km in, then give back 403 m on the spur down to Browning Bivouac at about 1148 m. DOC is blunt about the season: in winter and spring those scree slopes are snow covered and often icy, and ice axes and crampons are essential tools at those times. This is not a leg to take a dog on in those conditions. Browning Bivouac is a two bunk biv with mattresses, a toilet and water from a tap, so it is smaller again than the four bunk Top Crawford behind you. DOC grades the round as a whole an advanced tramping track and expert route, for fit, well equipped and experienced backcountry trampers. Dogs need a DOC permit and there is no way around it. Every metre of this leg is DOC conservation land, the Wanganui and Otira Catchments stewardship area, and DOC's rule for this route is dogs with a permit only, from the closest office, which is Hokitika. Sort it before you leave. From Browning Bivouac the round drops to Grassy Flats Hut, 1.5 to 2 hours by Dre's reckoning. We had that leg down as closed to dogs, because DOC's own track records marked both Styx Valley tracks No Dogs. That was out of date and we had it wrong. David Soper, Principal Ranger Biodiversity for DOC's Hokitika District, told us on 7 September 2026 that those records should read dogs by permit only, that DOC changed where dogs are allowed in the Hokitika District fairly recently, and that some historic information is still on the website waiting to be fixed. So the permit carries you down the Styx as well. The thing he raised that matters more than the rule is the bridges. Some of the river and creek crossings through this country are difficult or impossible on foot after rain, and the way across is a swingbridge or a three wire. Some dogs will not walk a swingbridge and no dog is getting over a three wire, and he has had trampers turn back at one. Work out what you are asking your dog to cross before you commit to the far side of it.
