The Wellington Cable Car carries dogs, and its rules are short: dogs on a lead at all times on the premises, in and out from the lower landing, two dogs to a person, and whoever is holding the lead has to be 16 or older. Dogs travel any time within opening hours, so you are not squeezed into an off peak window. The car climbs from Lambton Quay to the top of the Botanic Garden in about five minutes and runs every ten, which turns this loop into a walk you can do without a car. Guide and service dogs take priority and are not held to the designated areas in the cars. Inge and Pip put us onto the cable car, and checking it turned up something we had wrong. The garden itself is a lead area: Wellington Gardens says dogs are welcome as long as they are on a lead and you clean up after them. The nearest places to let a dog off are Te Ahumairangi Hill and the open land above the Terrace tunnel, both a short walk from the garden's edges.
