The last few hundred metres into Kinloch cross Taupō District Council's Kinloch Esplanade Reserve, where dogs are prohibited 'from 1 December to 31 March inclusive from the hours of 9am to 7pm inclusive' (Control of Dogs Bylaw 2021, First Schedule (f), 'The esplanade reserves at Hatepe and Kinloch'). The council lists that ban among areas where dogs are prohibited 'even when on leash'. From 1 April to 30 November, and before 9am or after 7pm in summer, dogs may cross it, but clause 7 requires the owner to 'keep that dog under control on a leash in public places at all times', so clip the lead on as the track drops to the Kinloch lakefront. Kinloch Marina Terrace Reserve, along the bay, is separately listed as a place where 'dogs may be exercised off-leash ... provided they are kept under the continued control of the person responsible'”.
