The Headland Loop is a 9.5 km add-on loop off the Whakaipo Bay to Kinloch (W2K) section of the Great Lake Trail at Lake Taupō, branching from the halfway point of the W2K track. It climbs through native forest to lookouts over the lake and is best suited to cyclists or fitter walkers; about 3 hours' walk.
It sits at the hard end and gains roughly 199 m, pitching up to 22 % at its steepest, and takes about 2h 19m to walk.
Dogs are allowed off the lead on this one. DOC’s own wording: “Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times.”.
