This walk comes from licensed public walk data and is being progressively confirmed against the authorities. Signs on the day always win. The rule-setter’s own wording: “Hutt City Council's Dog Control Bylaw 2025 (adopted 31 July 2025) makes on lead the default everywhere. Clause 6.1 says that except as provided in clause 7.1, no dog may be in a public place unless "the dog is kept under continuous control by an effectual leash held by a person and securely attached to a collar on the dog", and clause 7.1 is the exception: "a person may exercise a dog off lead in any designated Dog Exercise Area (including a Dog Park) as outlined in Schedule Four." Petone Recreation Ground is in that schedule, as item 2.6d, in these words: "Petone Recreation Ground (excluding children's playground and sports surfaces)", entrance Buick Street. The council's own map for 2.6d shades a band right around the outside of the ground and leaves the marked fields in the middle unshaded, so the perimeter loop is the off-lead part. The excluded middle is stricter than a lead: clause 9.2 makes "any marked sports surface" and "any unmarked sports surface when in use for sporting purposes" Dog Prohibition Areas, along with any children's playground in the district. The council puts the general position plainly on its own page: "In designated dog exercise areas your dog doesn't need to be on a lead but you need to have one with you. About Petone Recreational Ground Loop
This short track follows 1.0 km as a loop, near Lower Hutt in Wellington.
Kellie and Jack sent the council page and a photo of the sign, and the two agree. The loop around the outside of the ground is a designated dog exercise area, so Jack can be off the lead on it, but that stops at the grass in the middle. Marked sports surfaces are a no-dog area under the bylaw, not an on-lead one, and so is the children's playground, so keep to the perimeter and carry the lead. If a game is on, an unmarked surface in use counts as a sports surface too.
Graded easy, it stays flat overall, and takes about 11 min to walk.
