RW Tate Scenic Reserve Walk
Greytown · Wellington · Loop
The permit requirement shown here is DOC’s own published rule for this land. The DOC office and signs on the day have the final say. DOC’s own wording: “"You are not allowed to take a pet into conservation land without DOC permission. This includes national parks, wildlife areas and reserves." (Department of Conservation, Dog access.) R W Tate Scenic Reserve is signed "Dept of Conservation" at the entrance gate, and DOC publishes no dogs-allowed exception for this reserve by name, so the general rule is the one that applies”. Evidence: a hand-checked correction against the authority. How we check dog rules.
Good to know
A DOC dog permit is required before any dog walks here. Apply to the managing DOC office ahead of time; do not turn up with the dog first. This reserve is public conservation land, signed Department of Conservation at the gate, and DOC's rule is that a dog needs DOC permission on conservation land, reserves included. We had it as dogs allowed on inferred data with no rule-setter behind it, which was wrong, so it moves to permit until DOC publishes an allowance for the reserve by name.
About RW Tate Scenic Reserve Walk
RW Tate Scenic Reserve Walk is a loop of 0.8 km, near Greytown in Wellington.
This one is not an ordinary dog walk, whatever the gravel and the gate suggest. R W Tate Scenic Reserve is public conservation land, signed Department of Conservation at the entrance, and DOC's standing rule is that you cannot take a dog onto conservation land, reserves included, without DOC's permission. No DOC page publishes a dogs-allowed exception for this reserve by name, so assume you need a permit and sort it with the Wairarapa office before you go, not at the track. If you want the Wairarapa with your dog and no paperwork, pick a council walkway instead and read the sign at the gate.
It sits at the easy end and barely climbs, and takes about 11 min to walk.
The track takes in native forest. A DOC dog permit is required before any dog walks here. Arrange it with the managing DOC office ahead of your trip. Walkers rate it 3.0 / 5 across 3 reviews.
