The rule-setter’s own wording: “South Waikato District Council Dog Control Bylaw 2017, Second Schedule, read 8 September 2026. Under “Dog Exercise Areas” the schedule lists for Tīrau: “01 Prospect Avenue/Railway” and “02 Tirau Domain Area - Lower”. Clause 8.1 designates those areas by resolution of the Council, and clause 8.2 allows a dog in an exercise area to run off the lead provided it is under the control of a person capable of physically restraining it and of exercising oral and visual control over it. The council does not publish a boundary for the lower domain, and this walk covers more of the domain than that, so we have kept the verdict at on lead for the route as a whole rather than promise off lead ground we cannot point to. Nothing in the domain is a prohibited area: the bylaw's only Tirau entry there is the Church Street Playground, which is not on this walk”. Evidence: a hand-checked correction against the authority. Dogs are allowed here. Keep them on the lead, watch for ground-nesting birds and stock, and read the signs at the gate.
About Tirau Domain Walk
This short track follows 1.9 km as an out-and-back, near Tirau in Waikato.
Worth knowing before you go. The council designates the lower part of Tirau Domain a dog exercise area, so that is ground where a dog can legally be off the lead, but the council publishes no boundary for it and this walk covers more of the domain than the lower section, so we have left the walk marked on lead. Two things to keep clear of either way: the Church Street Playground in town is a prohibited dog area, and so is the Te Waihou Walkway to the Blue Spring up the road at Putaruru, which catches a lot of people out because it is the best known walk in the district. The bylaw prohibits dogs on it across the whole district, alongside the Waikato River Trails.
Graded easy, it climbs about 17 m overall, pitching up to 6 % at its steepest, and takes about 0.5–1 hr to walk.
