Hawke's Bay: Coast, River & Te Mata Peak
Every trail here is on-lead: the Hawke's Bay Trails cycleways are shared with bikes, and Te Mata Trust Park is a working sheep farm where leads are mandatory and pest-control bait stations sit off the tracks, so keep your dog close and out of the scrub. Napier and Hastings both run seasonal beach bylaws, so check current summer leash-hours before letting your dog on Westshore sand or near the Ahuriri Estuary, a protected bird habitat. Wineries welcome dogs in outdoor terraces and gardens only, never inside.
Rotorua Lakes & Redwoods
Every walk on this route is on-lead except the Hamurana lakefront reserve, and even there you should confirm the off-lead exercise area against Rotorua Lakes Council bylaw signage before unclipping, the Springs walk proper restricts dogs. Rotorua's lakes bloom blue-green algae in warm months, so check LAWA or council alerts before any swim, and note Blue Lake (Tikitapu) bans dogs from its main beach over summer. Keep dogs well clear of steaming geothermal ground, and scan for 1080 or pest-bait notices at bush-track entrances.
Mackenzie & the Aoraki Fringe
Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is entirely closed to dogs, do not drive the dog up SH80 to Hooker Valley, Mueller or Kea Point. Elsewhere dogs stay on-lead: the Alps 2 Ocean sections are shared cycle trails, and Sept–Feb the Twizel and Pukaki braided riverbeds hold nesting kakī (black stilt) and banded dotterel, so keep out of the gravel. The Ahuriri Valley allows dogs off-lead under effective control, but it's active 1080 and trapping country, check DOC alerts before you go, and watch lake edges for toxic algae in warm, low-flow summer.
