Great Lake Trail: Waihāhā Section is a track of 11.2 km, near Kuratau in Waikato.
The Waihāhā Track is a section of the Great Lake Trail in the Western Bays of Lake Taupō. From the Waihāhā River carpark on Western Bay Road (SH 32) it crosses a swing bridge and climbs onto the cliffs above the Waihāhā River, with views over the river gorge; about 3 hr 30 min walk.
It sits at the hard end and gains roughly 228 m, pitching up to 25 % at its steepest, and takes about 2h 36m to walk.
Dogs are allowed off the lead on this one. DOC’s own wording: “Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times.”.
