This walk was suggested by the community and checked against the authority quoted above before it was published. The route line comes from official track data. The rule-setter’s own wording: “Department of Conservation, Waihāhā Track page, read 4 September 2026: “Dogs with a DOC permit only. Contact closest DOC office to get a permit.” That is the general dog permit, the one any owner can apply for, not the hunting-dog permit. For this block the office is the Te Kūiti DOC office”. About Waihāhā Hut Track
Waihāhā Hut Track covers 9.3 km, near Kuratau in Waikato.
Starts at the same carpark as the Great Lake Trail's Waihāhā section on SH32, but heads away from the lake into Pureora Forest Park. The track follows the Waihāhā River through lower regenerating bush, climbs gradually over a saddle through a mix of regenerating forest, old growth and frost flats, crosses one swing bridge, then drops back to river level to reach Waihāhā Hut, a 10 bunk hut set right beside the river, which is lovely for a dip in summer. There is plenty of camping space around the hut for an easy overnight. DOC grades it an intermediate tramping track, 9.4 km one way and about 3 hours each way, and our traced line agrees within metres. The dog rule is the one to plan around: this is DOC land where dogs need a DOC permit arranged before you go, through the Te Kūiti office.
Expect hard going, with around 261 m of climb, and takes about 2 hr 17 min to walk.
