DOC’s own wording: “DOC's Hopkins and Huxley hunting page is the only DOC page that states dog access for this ground, and it says “Dogs (restricted numbers) allowed”, with the area “covered by an ‘open area permit’” that you get online. Its Know before you go section adds the condition in DOC's own words: “Dogs are allowed in this block but must be under control. Dogs should be kept on a lead at all times in riverbed areas and wetlands between the months of August and the end of February, because of nesting birdlife.” The walk is open riverbed almost the whole way, so that lead rule covers it outright for seven months of the year. DOC publishes no dog access rule on the two track records themselves, and the whole line sits inside Ruataniwha Conservation Park, checked against DOC's Public Conservation Land layer on 27 August 2026, so the permit is what makes a dog lawful here”. About Hopkins and Huxley: Monument Hut to Huxley Forks Hut
Hopkins and Huxley: Monument Hut to Huxley Forks Hut covers 9.0 km, near Lake Ōhau in Canterbury, walked as a point-to-point.
Nine kilometres of valley floor from Monument Hut up the Hopkins and round into the Huxley, finishing at Huxley Forks Hut. Amber and Roo put it in and described it exactly right: it starts at Monument Hut and follows along the valley. DOC publishes the two halves as separate lines, Hopkins Track from Monument to the Huxley Gorge and then the Huxley Valley Track, and they meet at the same point on the map, so it walks as one. DOC calls the Huxley “an open, grassy riverbed as far as Huxley Forks Hut” and notes a high water track option from Monument Hut with a swing bridge over the Huxley River, which is the line to know about when the river is up. Amber's other note is the one that will save you a trip, and DOC's own access page backs it: you need a 4WD for the track from the road end to Monument Hut. All vehicles get as far as the Ram Hill road end off Lake Ōhau Road, about 15 km north of Lake Ōhau Lodge, and past that it is 4WD only. DOC adds that the public road is officially closed, so check your insurance before you drive it, and that the 4WD track crosses the Hopkins River at Monument Hut. This is braided river country with treacherous crossings after rain, so the weather in the headwaters decides your day. Dogs need a DOC permit here and there is no way around it. The whole walk sits inside Ruataniwha Conservation Park, and the one DOC page that grants dog access is the Hopkins and Huxley hunting block page: dogs allowed in restricted numbers, under an open area permit you get online before you go. Read the condition that comes with it, because it lands on this walk squarely. DOC asks that dogs be on a lead at all times in riverbeds and wetlands from August to the end of February, for the nesting birds, and this route is riverbed nearly the whole way. From late August you are on the lead. Amber mentioned Elcho Hut as the other option, and it is a genuinely different day. Elcho sits on DOC's Mid Hopkins line, which carries on 21 km from the Huxley Gorge junction up to Dodger Hut, so going that way means turning right at the junction instead of left and committing to a much longer trip. From Huxley Forks you can keep going up the North or South Huxley instead. The same permit and the same lead rule apply to all of it.
Expect hard going, with around 185 m of climb, and takes about 2 hr 6 min to walk.
