This walk was suggested by the community and checked against the authority quoted above before it was published. The route line comes from official track data. DOC’s own wording: “DOC's Hopkins and Huxley hunting page is the only DOC page that states dog access for this ground, and it says “Dogs (restricted numbers) allowed”, with the area “covered by an ‘open area permit’” that you get online. Its Know before you go section adds the condition in DOC's own words: “Dogs are allowed in this block but must be under control. Dogs should be kept on a lead at all times in riverbed areas and wetlands between the months of August and the end of February, because of nesting birdlife.” This walk is open riverbed for nearly all of its 12 km, so that lead rule covers it outright for seven months of the year. DOC publishes no dog access rule on either track record itself, and the whole line sits inside Ruataniwha Conservation Park, checked against DOC's Public Conservation Land layer on 27 August 2026, so the permit is what makes a dog lawful here”. About Hopkins Valley: Monument Hut to Elcho Hut
Hopkins Valley: Monument Hut to Elcho Hut covers 12.0 km, near Lake Ōhau in Canterbury, walked as a point-to-point.
Twelve kilometres of valley floor from Monument Hut, straight up the Hopkins to Elcho Hut. This is the other option Amber and Roo asked about, the one that goes right at the Huxley Gorge junction instead of left, and it is a longer and lonelier day than the Huxley walk. DOC publishes it as two lines, the short Hopkins Track from Monument up to the junction and then the Mid Hopkins line that carries on north toward Dodger Hut. They meet at exactly the same point on the map, so it walks as one, and we have cut the second line at Elcho Hut, 8.5 km up it. This is braided river country and the valley is the track for most of it. Expect to pick your own line across shingle, expect unbridged side streams, and expect the weather in the headwaters to decide your day rather than the weather at the road end. Getting to the start is its own problem: all vehicles reach the Ram Hill road end off Lake Ōhau Road, about 15 km north of Lake Ōhau Lodge, and past that it is 4WD only to Monument Hut. DOC notes the public road is officially closed, so check your insurance before you drive it, and the 4WD track crosses the Hopkins River at Monument Hut. Dogs need a DOC permit and there is no way around it. The whole walk is inside Ruataniwha Conservation Park, and the one DOC page that grants dog access is the Hopkins and Huxley hunting block page: dogs in restricted numbers, under an open area permit you get online before you go. The condition attached to it lands squarely on this walk. DOC asks that dogs be on a lead at all times in riverbeds and wetlands from August to the end of February, for the nesting birds, and this route is riverbed nearly the whole way. Right now, and until the end of February, you are on the lead. Elcho Hut is not the end of the line. The Mid Hopkins carries on another 12.7 km north from the hut to Dodger Hut, and the North Elcho Stream Route climbs away from the hut door if you want height instead of distance. Same park, same block, same permit and the same lead rule on all of it.
